SACRAMENTO – The California Assembly has approved Assembly Bill 1556 by Assemblymember Mark Stone (D-Monterey Bay) to ensure that all Californians are protected against employment or housing discrimination regardless of gender identity.
“This bill is consistent with previous legislative efforts to remove gender-specific terms from California’s codes, and it reflects our state’s long-established goal to ensure that transgender and gender non-conforming individuals are protected from discrimination in employment and housing.”
Specifically, AB 1556 updates the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) to use gender inclusive language, such as “person” or “employee” from the gendered terms such as “he or she”. Much of FEHA had been previously updated to neutral terms, but these remaining terms needed to be changed in order to clarify that transgender and gender non-conforming individuals are fully protected under the law.
“California law includes the world’s strongest protections for LGBTQ people, preventing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “However, some code provisions have not been updated to reflect that reality. for transgender and – we appreciate Assemblymember Stone’s dedication to advancing a bill that clarifies protections for the LGBTQ community.”
The bill now goes to the Governor.
