Assemblymember Robert Rivas Condemns Trump Administration Rollback of California Vehicle Emission Standards

For immediate release:

(SACRAMENTO) – Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s illegal decision to revoke California’s authority to combat air pollution from vehicle tailpipe emissions.

“Make no mistake, climate change is real and the time to act is now. Yet Trump continues to deny science and take our nation backwards, putting our environment and public health at risk. The administration’s recent actions are appalling and unconstitutional. The state of California has taken a collaborative approach to address tailpipe pollution and climate change with automobile makers in order to protect the health of our nearly 40 million residents,” said Assemblymember Robert Rivas.

“California has led the way in our nation’s efforts to combat climate change and 13 states have chosen to adopt our stronger greenhouse gas standards,” continued Rivas. “I will urge our Attorney General to use the judicial system to block Trump’s illegal encroachment on the rights and powers that California holds as an individual state.”

“Despite the Trump Administration’s actions to weaken our state’s efforts to fight climate change and pollution, California has and will remain committed to protecting the environment and improving the public health of communities throughout the state. I will continue to support public policy that puts the health of all Californians first.”

Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) represents the 30th Assembly District. This district includes the communities of Aromas, Big Sur, Chualar, Gilroy, Greenfield, Gonzales, Hollister, King City, Morgan Hill, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Soledad, Spreckels, and Watsonville.
