Assemblymember Rivas Addresses the State’s Collaborative Response to COVID-19

For immediate release:

(SALINAS, CA) - On March 11, 2020, Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) commended the State’s ongoing response to COVID-19 and urged residents to be diligent in safeguarding the health of their families and community.

“I commend and support the ongoing response by the State to the spread of COVID-19, which has been the strongest and swiftest response in the nation,” said Rivas. “I agree with Governor Newsom, who has emphasized that all levels of government should coordinate from the ‘bottom-up,’ starting with recommendations from each County’s health organization specific to the situation in that community. With this approach, we are working together to ensure the health and safety of all our residents, which is our top priority.”

But Assemblymember Rivas also urges diligence by residents in following the precautions recommended by health experts to prevent further spread of the virus. “Wherever you live,” said Rivas, “please follow the recommendations of public health officials for your own safety and the safety of others. It is crucial that every resident does their part to prevent further spread of this virus.” Specific recommendations from the California Health Department relating to COVID-19 include the following:

  • Wash your hands often, for 20-seconds each time with soap and water
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces often
  • Keep at least 6-feet away from people who are ill
  • Stay home if you do not feel well

People most at risk are older adults and those with underlying health conditions. These people should avoid crowded places and non-essential travel, especially cruise ships. People who care for those at greater risk should also take special precautions with their own health. If you have symptoms of COVID- 19, please call your healthcare provider immediately. According to Rivas, “The State of California is also

taking action to ensure residents have access to testing if needed. Free testing for COVID-19 is being made available throughout California, so residents who need it can have access to it regardless of health care coverage or immigration status.”
