Assemblymember Robert Rivas’ Statement on Election

For immediate release:

HOLLISTER – Today, Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Hollister) released the following statement on the importance of the 2020 Election:

Today is one of the most consequential elections in recent memory. If you have not already, please vote, please make your voice heard, and please, no matter the result, remain true to the decency and civility that is essential to binding us together as Americans.

This has been an unprecedented year in many ways. A pandemic has physically separated us from our friends and loved ones. Wildfires, spurred on by climate change, has devastated communities throughout the state. An economic recession drove millions of people to apply for unemployment benefits almost overnight. But one of the worst aspects of 2020, in my opinion, has been the unprecedented hyper-partisanship that has divided our country.

A robust democracy is based on freedom of speech, a marketplace of competing ideas, and collaboration among people of various beliefs. Without these shared values, our country cannot function. No matter the outcome of today's election, I ask you to remember that we are all more alike than you think. I ask you to treat others with civility and respect. I ask you to avoid violence or destruction to our community.

I am confident in our country and that today’s votes will demonstrate that the best days of America are ahead.  But even if there are disappointments, I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working even harder for that better tomorrow.
