Assemblymember Robert Rivas Outraged by SCOTUS Decision, Emphasizes Abortion Is Still Safe and Legal in California, and Commits to Enshrining Reproductive Freedoms in the State Constitution

For immediate release:

Sacramento, CA— Today, following the release of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was appalling and offensive – and it is likely a disturbing harbinger of more rights being stripped away from millions of Americans. While this decision did not come as a surprise, it is still troubling to see the extent to which the right-wing Court will go to attack the rights of women and betray their oaths of office.

“Abortion is still safe and legal here in California, and I will do everything in my power to ensure it stays that way and is accessible to all. Our state will remain a safe haven for those seeking reproductive healthcare and abortion services. I am proud to co-author legislation further solidifying abortion access in state law, including SCA 10 (Atkins), which enshrines reproductive freedom and the right to abortion in the state constitution, and AB 1666 (Bauer-Kahan), which prohibits the enforcement of out-of-state abortion restrictions here in California.

“I urge all Americans to stand up against this grave threat to our liberty. It is our civic and moral duty to continue the fight for access to abortion for all.”
